This Is Love

One of my favorite artists- PJ Harvey. Her music has been an enormous part of my life over the last 15 years. And she writes some of the most poignant love songs of any modern musician, in my humble opinion. Enjoy some PJ...

Lay and Love

I think this video is both weird and sweet. Just like Bonnie Prince Billy. And just like my favorite kind of romances...

I Used To Love Her...

Here's a golden oldie gem from the 80s. This was the best footage I could find of the Guns N' Roses that I remember & loved back in middle school. All the other videos for this song just kinda weirded me out...wonder what talk show this perfomed this on? Love the lead-in intro, too...

Stay sick!

Ughhh...I am miserably ill. Caught the evil dreaded coughing/fever/walking nightmare that seems to be going around. On top of that- had a little spill & royally f*cked up my back. So I'm currently a bent over, shuffling, sniffling, sweating, miserable excuse for a human. And blog postings do not take precedence over the 14 hrs of sleep a day I seem to need. Sorry.

Since I'm sick- I thought I'd post something that might make all of you sick, too. So here's an old Meatloaf video- with Cher, no less. Now you can call me names- but I still think that Bat Out of Hell is one of the best albums of my misty-eyed youth & I STILL listen to it, karaoke it & know every word to every song. But everything else the Loaf has done since is dead to me (barring his acting career- which I respect). I don't know what album this came from- but it is not what I call classic Meatloaf, despite the fact that he is wearing his signature ruffle tux shirt & carrying his little red hankie. And is it just me or is Cher's make-up so metallic that she kinda looks like a slutty robot? This is pretty much everything bad about the 80s all wrapped up in one excruciating duet. It is bad. Maybe so bad, it's good? You decide...check out Dead Ringer For Love.

Love Needs A Heart

Love Hangover

I have a hangover- so this seemed appropriate. And weird. I also feel weird. Enjoy!

Love Will Tear Us Apart

Today's video is inspired by the fact that I watched 24 Hour Party People last night & it put me in such a mood for Joy Division. I was quite disappointed by the lack of mention of The Smiths in this story of the Manchester music scene...but whatever. I've always loved this song because it resonates with me on so many levels. The romantic idea of love is all about roses, doves, kisses & the reuniting of those who were "destined" to be together forever. I've always found the reality of love to be terrifying, exhilarating & sometimes- it really does just tear you to pieces. It can make you sick & miserable. It makes you aware of your vulnerabilities & can make you suddenly realize everything that you ARE NOT. Yes- it does bring people together, but it also tears them apart...

Too Much Love

Double damn! I frikkin missed a day! Fuck! Well- needless to say, I was otherwise occupied & busy with the kick-off of the Slabtown Bender. Since I skipped one- I'll give ya a twofer today. These vids are of the same song- but one was recorded live in Memphis in July 2007 and the other was recorded by yours truly- just last night, right here in lovely Portland, OR. So enjoy yourself some Harlan T. Bobo...

Bah...

I don't much feel like discussing love today. I don't think I'll want to discuss it for a long long time...but I'll soldier on & keep posting. This is an oldie but a goodie.

R.I.P. Lux Interior- Thee Most Exalted Potentate of Love

I was devastated to hear the news that Lux Interior of The Cramps passed away this morning. He was the coolest sexiest creepiest cat that ever was & I've been wiggling & wriggling to his music for over 15 years now. It's like a punch in the stomach. I can't stop crying. I guess I just always assumed that Lux and Ivy would be strutting around, teaching kids what rock n roll was really about, forever. He was a punk and he was rockabilly. He was an innovator and he also cherished & promoted his love for the best oldest classics of rock. He was sloppy and sublime. A Cramps show was like a wild burlesque circus sideshow that celebrated all the depravity & sexuality repressed in the monotony of everyday life on the street- with the best soundtrack imaginable. The Cramps sang about everything I love- monsters, kinky scenes, chickens, sex, drugs & rock n roll. No one will ever look or sound like Lux.

I can't stop thinking about how some of his sweat was flung onto my upturned adoring face as he writhed around in his own personal rock n roll stage orgy- and I stood smashed up against the stage barrier at the Portland 1999 Cramps show. He wildly climbed the speakers & ripped one apart- took his pants off & teased us all his nekkid wanger smashed against the mesh of the speaker screen. And I loved every filthy depraved minute of it. Now let's all get Fucked Up!!! This one's for you, Lux...Thee Most Exalted Potentate of Love

Do You Love Me?

Today's video is from one of the most prolific love song-writers of the last 30 years. Nick Cave has seen me sobbing through countless break-ups & been the common ground for several heady love affairs. I love the imagery of this video- the neon, the seedy strip club, all the shadows & red lights & velvet curtains. It reminds me of the sort of love that happens late at night, in a dark bar reeking of booze & cigarettes, over drinks & whispered exchanges- with hinted promises of what is to come later that night. The sort of love that evaporates in bright sunlight... just because love doesn't last, doesn't mean it's not worth pursuing, right? And who among us has not at one time or another wanted to ask the person next to them "Do you love me? Really love me?"

A call to arms

The way I'm feeling today...there was no other song I could choose, really. I feel as though I've been fighting the battles and losing the war. Guess I'm just not as bad-assed as Pat Benatar...though I do think I dress considerably better. Regardless- love ain't always nice & pretty. That's my point.

L-O-V-E

In honor of it being Feb- the romantic month o' Vallytines- here is my first posting in regards to, well- that crazy little thing called LOVE. I always loved this video & my appreciation for it has only grown over the years (along with it being one of my favorite songs to karaoke). When it comes to tongue in cheek- who could possibly express it better than Queen?
